Hogback Community College                                    HOMEBREWING 101: An introduction to the art, science, and craft of brewing local ale

Have you ever wondered how to make beer? Did you ever think about trying home brewing, but were concerned that it was too difficult? This course will teach the basic methods for brewing beer at home, with an emphasis on recipe development and the utilization of local ingredients. Over the course of four meetings, students will gain hands-on instruction in the brewing process, using techniques and equipment they can easily employ at home on their own.

Taught by veteran brewer Jeff Munroe, the course schedule will follow a typical six-week brewing time frame, from brewing and fermenting through bottling and carbonation. Students will learn how to make a five-gallon batch of ale or lager. Concepts to be covered include recipe design, ingredient selection, brewing, grain infusions, hopping, fermenting, siphoning, and bottling. In the end, students will be able to brew their own beer at home from a recipe they create to match their specific preferences in beer styles and flavor. Where possible, students will also be provided with contacts for growers of local ingredients and/or tips for growing their own.

The course is specifically targeted at students with no prior brewing experience, and is not intended to provide instruction in advanced techniques for those already brewing on their own.

       

 

 

About the Instructor:

Jeff Munroe is an associate professor of geology at Middlebury College. He has over fifteen years of home brewing experience and is continually amazed by how easy and enjoyable it is to make really good tasting beer at home

*While our courses offer the structure and content of college courses, we are not seeking accreditation for Hogback Community College, nor do we currently offer credits for transfer to other educational institutions. We are continuing to look at our options for offering students course credit in the future. Numerous teachers have taken Hogback Community College courses as part of their Professional Development requirements.
