Join local author, educator, and grower Mark Krawczyk for two free evening events celebrating the recent release of his new book Coppice Agroforestry – more than 10 years in the making! Activities begin at 5:30pm at Mark’s small farm along Route 7 in New Haven for a conservation, design, and land-based enterprise-focused field walk, examining a hedgerow/shelterbelt planting that’s home to more than 50 species of trees and shrubs. We’ll discuss the design, establishment, and maintenance of this planting, along with the benefits and challenges that have come along the way.
And at 6:30pm, join us at Tourterelle for a book launch event, celebrating the release of Mark’s new book Coppice Agroforestry – Tending Trees for Product, Profit and Woodland Ecology. Most trees and shrubs don’t die when you cut them – they resprout! When we do this to generate materials for use in craft and commerce like fuelwood, building materials, rustic furniture construction, propagation stock and much more, we call the practice coppicing. While widespread in Europe and other parts of the world, the practice is little known here in the United States, but hopefully this comprehensive manual will help change that.
This evening event will include time to mingle with fellow trees lovers, craftspeople, and forest managers, a brief book reading along with a slide show demonstrating the potential of these practices, as well as a chance to purchase a signed copy from the author. There will also be a cash bar.
